J&K local poll dates announced, to be held in 4 phases | India News

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Saturday announced the poll schedule for the upcoming local polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The municipal election will be held in four phases starting from October 8 and ending on October 16, said chief electoral officer Shaleen Kabra. He said that the polling hours will be from 7 am to 2 pm.

Counting will be held on October 20 after all the phases are over.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik appealed to the National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to participate in the local elections.

The Governor said that Artcile 35-A is sub-judice and that no stand can be taken on it until a new government is formed in the state.

Both the mainstream political parties in the state – NC and PDP – have decided to boycott the forthcoming urban local body and panchayat polls and sought the Centre’s commitment in safeguarding constitutional provisions for Jammu and Kashmir.

The NC and the PDP decided not to contest the polls till the Centre and the state administration clarify their position on Article 35-A, which gives special rights to the people in the state and bars outsiders from owning immovable property.
